Tumahubong, Philippines. The released trailer for “In Thy Name” has ignited anticipation for a film promising a powerful portrayal of faith, sacrifice, and heroism. Inspired by the true story of the martyrdom of Fr. Rhoel D. Gallardo, CMF, and his companion martyrs, and the bravery of Filipino soldiers. The movie, starring Marc Carlos “McCoy” De Leon and a strong supporting cast, is set to hit Philippine cinemas on March 5, 2025. But who is Fr. Rhoel Gallardo, and what makes his story so compelling?
Beyond the dramatic narrative hinted at in the trailer – “Sa ngalan ng Diyos Ama, Diyos Anak, at Diyos Espiritu; sariling buhay ang handog niya sa pagkamit ng kapayapaan” (In the name of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; he offered his own life for the attainment of peace) – lies the life of a man deeply committed to his faith and his people. Born in Olongapo, Zambales on November 29, 1965, Fr. Rhoel Gallardo, CMF, was the second of five children. His path to priesthood wasn’t a preordained one; it was a conscious choice made in 1988, a decision that would ultimately define his life. He entered the Claretian congregation, taking his first vows the following year and eventually being ordained a priest in 1994.

His dedication to serving others led him to volunteer for a mission in the challenging environment of Tumahubong in Sumisip, Basilan – a testament to his unwavering commitment. It was there, in this remote and often volatile region, that his life tragically intersected with the brutality of the Abu Sayyaf group. On March 20, 2000, the militants attacked the Claret School of Tumahubong campus, abducting numerous individuals, including Fr. Rhoel Gallardo, CMF. During his captivity, accounts suggest he acted with remarkable courage and compassion, protecting his fellow captives, offering spiritual comfort through prayer, and even preventing the rape of women.
The tragic end came on May 3, 2000, when Fr. Gallardo and several others were found dead. His death, marked by three close-range gunshot wounds and the removal of his fingernails, became a symbol of unwavering faith in the face of unspeakable violence. His refusal to renounce his faith, even under duress, further solidified his legacy as a martyr. Currently, the Claretians in the Philippines, also known as Fr. Rhoel Gallardo Province has started the preparations for opening a cause for his beatification, recognizing his life as a testament to selfless service and unwavering devotion.

“In Thy Name” promises to bring Fr. Gallardo’s story to a wider audience, showcasing not only his martyrdom but also the heroism of Filipino soldiers and the enduring spirit of faith amidst conflict. The film’s release during the Jubilee Year of Hope adds another layer of significance, highlighting the themes of peace, sacrifice, and the unwavering strength of the human spirit. The trailer, with its powerful imagery and evocative tagline, leaves audiences eagerly awaiting the full narrative on March 5, 2025, in cinemas nationwide.
